The healthy habit of hand washing
Clean hands are the first step to a healthy India
6 million. That is the number of children around the world who die of diarrhoea before they even see their fifth birthday. In a country like ours where washing hands is considered a chore unless they are visibly dirty, the repercussions are startling. Fortunately, the solution is very simple.
The problems of insanitation are particularly critical in the villages in India where thousands of deaths are caused by diarrhoeal diseases. It is estimated that, annually, India loses around 1.5 million of its children to Diarrhoea alone! Lack of awareness, coupled with negligence, means that most victims do not realise the importance of sanitation until it is too late. Research shows that washing hands with soap can reduce the risk of diarrhoea by up to 45%!
Lifebuoy has designed a hand washing programme to help drive the importance of hand washing to the people of India and promote health and hygiene. Through a combination of comics, songs, games and rewards, our Lifebuoy hand washing programmes encourage children to sustain good hand washing behaviours. These help people, not only understand why washing hands with soap is important, but also practice the hand washing habit over a period of time and get rewarded for sticking to it.
Lifebuoy’s ambition is to bring health and hygiene to 1 billion people across the country. Over 257 million people have already been reached, and programmes like ‘School of 5’ are only becoming more popular. The ‘School of 5’ initiative was launched with the sole purpose of teaching school children to wash their hands on 5 key occasions. By getting into the habit of washing their hands after using the toilet, before eating, and when bathing, children are able to drastically reduce their chances of falling ill; keeping them healthy and happy.
